NLOCATION Walking Tour #2 has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 9 at 10 am. The second Location Survey will be delayed accordingly, and open on the same day -- June 9 and open for 10 days. You have to visit the sites in person in order to vote on location. Why delay? The heat of summer will hit early this weekend, and the originally scheduled time of 1 pm threatened to make the event an unpleasant, sweltering march -- instead of the joyous journey of adventure it should be! Why join the walking tour? The walking tour is the best opportunity to help choose the mural site. Truly, the only way to appreciate the differences between the sites is to see them in person -- and talk them over with neighbors. We can share how we use the places, what we love about each site, and share concerns with a rapt audience. PLUS it is a great time to make new friends and explore and imagine our neighborhood in a new, superfun way. Kids love the walking tours, too (especially chatty ones with scooters, 7+). Which sites are being considered? There are currently about 15 sites up for consideration. Some are large (i.e. the concrete pad near the Spiderman Playground, intersections of greenbelt paths, or Hacienda Ave cul-de-sac), and others are small (i.e. crosswalk on Quail or the sidewalk behind Atria Covell Gardens). We can walk to all of them within about 30 minutes. We have a limited budget, so we will rank the sites in order of preference, and see how far our paint will take us. Since we will stop at each site to chat, the tour takes about 90 minutes. ![]() Proposed locations are highlighted in dark blue. Volunteers are slowly contacting residents of adjoining homes to see how people feel about having a mural (or smaller painted feature) nearby. In addition to the neighborhood vote, the feasibility of each of these sites must be determined to choose the final location(s) -- this means checking to see if neighbors in adjoining houses support the project and asking the city about logistics with each site (road closures, repaving schedule, etc). How can I help? We could use a helping hand this week with compiling location info from the walking tours (i.e. typing and organizing info) and with chatting with neighbors at certain proposed sites. Please contact Danielle if you're interested in helping out: daniellefodor@gmail.com.

Please contact Meg 203-464-2484, Juliette 530-902-8407, or Jenny 530-574-2483 or email: paintthestreetdavis@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * While all city residents will be invited to paint the mural, the design process is focused on nearby residents living within the borders of Sycamore, Anderson, Alvarado, and the North Davis Ditch/Malaga. But... if you work in or walk through this neighborhood on a daily basis, you are welcome to attend. Hi neighbors,
Today, please join us for a walking tour of the neighborhood at 6:45 pm. We'll meet at Hacienda Park and walk from there to the greenbelt. The theme of this walking tour is "Imagine and Explore" -- and that's exactly what we'll do. With clipboards in hand, we'll look at each of the sites that neighbors have suggested for the street mural. In each location, we'll stop and imagine what it would be like to have that location transformed by place-making art. Along the way, we'll notice our surroundings, learn how different people use the space, and write down any concerns. This walking tour will give the resident Creative Action Team all the info they need to decide which sites are feasible -- and then we'll start talking to adjacent households to see where the site is invited by residents. Join us for a fun (and informative) way to explore the neighborhood. You'll make new friends, see the neighborhood with fresh eyes, and create new stories about the place we live. If you're running late -- feel free to join up with us on the greenbelt. You can look for small group of people with a few clipboards in hand. Kids welcome to attend, but the activity is more adult-oriented. Oh -- and this is a good time to mention that we're still looking for volunteers to help with the location selection process (sifting through surveys, talking to neighbors) -- you can email paintthestreetdavis@gmail.com to offer help REMINDER: Mural Location Survey #1 closes today. You can fill it out online here. ALSO THIS WEEK: May 23 - 26 – “The Artist Is In” Drop - In Design Workshop – Kid-Friendly 9 - 11 am – Blue / Spiderman Park 3:30 - 6:30 pm – Big Lawn near Dominos May 24, 7 - 8:30 pm -- Mural Info Session #3 -- Atria Covell Gardens NEXT WEEK: May 31, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Design Workshop 1: Brainstorm -- Location TBA June 2, 1 pm – LOCATION Walking Tour #2 – Visit Short List Sites & Vote -- Meet at Big Lawn in Greenbelt near Dominos June 3, 3 – 5 pm – Design Workshop 2: Design & Draw -- Location TBA The first info session (held Monday, May 14 at Hacienda Park) was a big success, with about 30 people showing up to meet neighbors, share ideas, learn about the mural design/paint process, and ask questions. There were kids and elders present, original home owners and people who just moved into the neighborhood -- as well as a wide variety of perspectives on what art and community look like. I'm excited to see these conversations and connections build over the coming months -- and to have about 8 new volunteers who signed up to help with the project (yay!).
I'm aware we haven't yet completed outreach to every home in the neighborhood, and for that opinions on art vary widely. For that reason there are two more info sessions scheduled, so that people receiving flyers for the first time today will be able to get up to speed on the project. Special thanks to all the volunteers handing out flyers this week! The info session presentation (with bright and beautiful slides), covers the basic "Who, What, Why, Where, When, and How" of the project -- tells the story of how community art is made -- and explains how to get involved. If you missed the first info session -- there's two more opportunities. UPCOMING INFO SESSIONS * Sunday, May 20, 1:30 to 3:30 pm -- Dos Pinos Community Room, 2550 Sycamore Lane -- Info Session #2 * Thursday, May 24, 7 to 8:30 pm -- Atria Covell Gardens -- Info Session #3 If you're just itching to get your ideas in the mural (or help decide the location), you're welcome to skip the info sessions and just come to a design workshop or walking tour. The full EVENT SCHEDULE with dates and locations for all workshops and painting days is linked here. REMINDER: The Location Survey is still open and you can fill it out here. The calendar for design and location workshops is still evolving. Here is a quick run-down on the dates I've got scheduled so far.
In addition to the above scheduled events, I am working to schedule 4 additional workshops, by Monday:
If you would like to participate in the design process, please fill out the following Doodle form by Monday morning, 10 am, so that I know which dates work for you and your family: https://doodle.com/poll/m9r4etkbye3k23r6. All design workshops are free and open to all living in the neighborhood. Hi folks, I am hosting the first of 2 mural info sessions this Monday, May 14 at Hacienda Park. Both sessions will include the same info -- 2nd date TBA soon. If you are curious about the mural, attending an info session is the best way to get a quick understanding of what the project is about and how to get involved. Please BYO Chair. I will bring a few extras, but not enough for all. Look forward to seeing you there! Paint the Street is a fun, guided community art project to create public murals that improve the quality of neighborhood life

Between May and October 2018, local artist Danielle Fodor is leading a community mural in the Senda Nueva neighborhood (between Sycamore, Anderson, Alvarado, and the North Davis ditch). Neighborhood residents will design and paint a mural directly onto the asphalt street surfaces of our neighborhood. Creating art together will give us an opportunity to connect with neighbors, deepen our connection to the place we live, and build new friendships. BYO Chair & A Dessert or Snack to Share More Info: www.daniellefodor.com daniellefodor@gmail.com The mural is a project of the City of Davis Arts and Cultural Affairs program, and is supported in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. May is the month for launching Paint the Street -- Senda Nueva.
Senda Nueva is the official name for the North Davis neighborhood between Sycamore Lane, Anderson, Alvarado Avenue, and the North Davis ditch -- although people often refer to the 'hood as "North Davis, near the Marketplace plaza" or "over by the Dominos". "Senda Nueva" is our name on the subdivision map, though, and it seems fitting for this project. "Senda Nueva" is Spanish for "new path", and this project will renew our public paths and streets with art. I will be updating this site frequently with events and happenings for the mural project. If you'd like to get involved, please send me an email at daniellefodor@gmail.com. These murals are like a barn-raising -- lots of opportunities for many people with many different abilities to help out, and the more the merrier. I can't wait to hear from you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paint the Street Senda Nueva is a project of the City of Davis Arts and Cultural Affairs program, and is supported in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. |
